Agron Offers a Wide Range of LED Lights for Growing Needs

LED lighting is growing increasingly popular in horticulture, and for good reason. These lights are superior to other lighting sources because they allow horticulturalists to control the spectrum of light and produce high light levels while being able to manage the emitted heat. Many growers use these lights because they can better determine the light composition and ensure their plants will have light for many years to come, without the need for changing bulbs on a regular basis.

What Is an LED Light?

LED stands for light-emitting diode. This type of light is a semiconductor, and it emits light when electricity runs through it. LED semiconductors release energy in the form of photons. The color of the light emitted is directly related to the photons. When companies manufacture LED lights, they put chips inside that control what colors will be emitted.

There are two main colors that are essential for growing plants indoors, and they are red and blue. Red is essential for photosynthesis and ensuring stems grow long and are not inhibited in their growth. Blue light is important for growth in fullness and flowering.

There are also yellow, orange, and green lights that can be emitted from LED lamps. Because bulbs with other colors can be more expensive, many growers opt for using a simple red/blue combination bulb for their growing needs.

LED Lights are Solid-State Devices

Because LED lights do not run on gas, they allow electricity to flow through the bulb instead of through a gas tube. This makes LED lights ideal for digital control systems, which are used by growers who mass produce.

Being able to control how much light is being emitted and the time periods makes growing plants indoors a more automated process. Because growers can use LED lights with their digital control systems, they are better able to mimic sunrise, sunset, and daily light integrals that are so essential for healthy plant growth.

How are LED Lights Used in Horticulture?

Lights have been used in horticulture since they were first invented. While incandescent bulbs were once standard for indoor horticulture, they leaned too heavily towards the red spectrum and almost always resulted in taller “leggy” plants without much strength or root structure.

Many indoor growing setups use what appears to be purple lights. The purple color comes from the combination of blue and red lights in the bulb. These are often suspended from the ceiling, and the fixtures are placed at a precise point above the plants. The lighting can be programmed to come on at certain times, with the hopes of being able to mimic the natural sunlight plants would be exposed to if they were being grown outdoors.

LED lights offer a much greater level of energy efficiency, allowing for as much as 80% less energy expenditure over incandescent bulbs. When bulbs are being used in large numbers, it is incredibly important to use energy-efficient bulbs that are lasting.

What to Consider When Choosing LED Growing Lights

There are a few things you should consider when purchasing any LED growing lights. Making the right choice is essential for indoor growing, no matter what type of crop you are producing. Consider the following for the best results.

  • Choose a light that offers the highest level of craftsmanship. LED lights will last, on average, about ten years.
  • The reputation of the brand is an essential consideration. Read reviews and get to know each company before you purchase.
  • Consider the consumption of energy for the LED light you are considering. It is important to choose one that offers the highest level of energy efficiency.
  • Low heat output is another important consideration. Too much heat can destroy your plants, while too little can stunt their growth.
  • Checking the quality of the semiconductor chips is also integral. You need to know what chips are being used, so you can rest assured your plants will have the light colors they need.
  • You should also consider your space. Some lights are more compact and ideal for small setups, while others are massive and better for commercial applications. Knowing how much space you have to work with is important.
